When Are You Coming Home?

Today I was talking to my little nephew Zion and he shoots me all these questions…

Zion: Tita, why don’t you like to come home?

Me: No, of course I like to come home.

Zion: Why then? The airplane did not come to get you?

Me: No, I was the one who did not ride the airplane.

Zion: You are staying there nalang?

Me: No, of course I’m coming home. I want to see you.

Zion: Mommy said you’re coming April 4. Are you staying there matagal pa?

Me: No, just wait for me. I’ll come home.

Zion: We’ll wait very long?

I choke back tears.

How can I tell you, little boy, that the world you’re living in has very cruel people – people who exploit others, especially those under them, people who lie, who break their promises even before making them.

How can I tell you, little boy, that the airplane waited for me, but my passport was held in the hands of a man who is so opportunistic he sees his people as toys.

How can I tell you, little boy, that I too have the same question,

Will I wait very long?
