Look what I just found!
I don’t know how long Daiso has infiltrated the UAE but I haven’t seen a shop until now.
Since I discovered Japanese discount stores in the Philippines, I became hooked. They have everything, depending on the size of the store, from housewares to gadgets to beauty products to food! Also their wide customer range entertains and satisfies children, yuppies and elderlies.
Daiso is the largest chain of these thrift stores in Japan. What I love best about them is they have too much to draw you in, I could roam around for hours in this wonderland. And even if I’m not looking for anything in particular, I consistently end up buying something.
I always find things like these:
1. Something I didn’t know I needed until I see how useful they are.
Earphone Covers
Organizers: Clear files and Boxes
2. Something so useful even if I don’t really need it, I think of how I’d be needing it.
Blanket Compression Bag
Wood-looking Sticker Pads
3. Something I improvise on by myself then see there’s actually something called it.
Revolving Neck-Tie/Belt Hanger
Computer Cleaner
See what I mean?
Daiso has many copycats around the world. Only recently did I learn that the first Daiso shop in the Philippines was just a copied concept by Filipinos. The real Japanese owners then had to use another name when they franchised in our country: Saizen.
But I’m not picky. As long as the store values money, I’m in!
Here’s what I bought while waiting for my husband to pick me up after his daily AWPN (After Work Power Nap):
1. Car CD case and organizer because our car is beginning to be a dump site again.
2. Belt Hanger because he has too many and mine are taking up his space.
3. Black tape because I’m OC-OC (obsessive compulsive) and I want all my floor mop handles to be of the same color.
4. Key tags for our many keys. We have a total of 6 doors in our flat. It’s an Arab-designed building so I’m guessing they love doors too much.
All for 28 Dirhams (7.00 Dirhams each).
Since it’s a one-price-all store, you must still be wise. Most items are cheaper than grocery stores but a lot of items are also better bought somewhere else.
So there, shoppers, check-out the Daiso nearest you. You might just find what you’ve been looking for!
Saizen – Daiso Philippines is located in the third floor of the Ortigas wing of Robinsons Galleria. Other branches would be at Marquee Mall, Ali Mall Cubao and Trinoma.
I’m happy Asian influence is slowly creeping into the UAE. Maybe one day maki and sushi won’t be a rare find.

Love Daiso/Jap 88 store. Still have to see Saizen. Hirap pumunta ng Robinsons. Haven’t bought anything yet–still haven’t seen a good bargain that I could use. I’m that cheap mwahaha.
I’m looking out for a yogurt straining system to make yogurt cheese.
