Shamcey Supsup – My Thoughts

Would you change your religious beliefs to marry the person that you love? Why or why not?”

“If I had to change my religious beliefs, I would not marry the person that I love because the first person I love is God, who created me. I have my faith and my principles, and this is what makes me who I am. And if that person loves me, he should love my God, too.”

Q&A Video here.

I am not disputing Angola’s win but I for one think that the Philippines was worthy of a rank (or two) higher.

Compared to the others, hers was not a safe answer – predictable, rehearsed and bordering on shallow. She had a very gutsy answer to a very argumentative question.

I believe that in her months of training and preparation, she had been oriented for the possibility of controversial questions (religion, race, gender) during the Q&A. Being the smart person that she is, she knew she had the option to answer a religious question with a universal answer – religious tolerance.

But she chose not to. In that tense moment, she declared to the world her faith and innermost convictions. It may not have gratified the ”universal” judges but she knew she had a higher Judge to please. That is spiritual beauty.

Shamcey is a believer and no matter how people over-analyze her answer saying it was misinterpreted or she didn’t mean it that way, we know she DID mean it that way. Plain and simple. In this era of ‘nothing is absolute’ and ‘everything is universal’, Shamcey stood her ground and she stood it well.

Cheers to this modern-day Queen Esther, who knows but that you have come to the top 5 for such a time as this.

  1. BTW, Oprah never said the widely-distributed quote, apparently. Also, I got the wrong impression that Shamcey came from a poor family. They’re middle-class naman pala unline Venus Raj’s.
Natch, I agree with Shamcey’s response. Very non-PC so definitely went against her with the judges.

  2. My roommate, a stauch Shamcey supporter, could not get over Shamcey’s rather low position in the top 5. She spent some hours online last night and declared to me that some sociologist who’s a bit of an expert on pageants has said that historically speaking, the best anyone has placed after answering a religion-related question was first-runner up. They should just stop asking such questions in the first place.
