Welcome to my happy place. Sharjah is one of the 7 emirates comprising the United Arab Emirates, a 2 hours, 30 minutes bus ride from Abu Dhabi.

There is actually nothing spectacular about this city. It’s the same dry hot land like Abu Dhabi but what makes this place special are the people I know there.

They make me feel like family.
During my first visit, they treated me to a nail spa, a luxury I secretly craved for the longest time but didn’t afford.

I told the lady, “Ate, virgin feet pa ako ha. 24 years worth of libag at 6 years worth of football kalyo.” She said, “Easy lang to.”
A few minutes later, her face was painted with aversion plus exhaustion from scrubbing harder than the usual.

Another reason why I love Sharjah is because of this person. Majalla Phoebe “Aya” Rico is a friend I met during my first year at FEBIAS College of Bible. We were roommates and together with another friend, we formed a unique triad that surpassed all sorts of misadventures for a year.

Aya and I share a non-conventional friendship. We may not see or talk to each other for years, but when we do, we just pick up from where we left off. No demands, no pressures and no girly-clashes.
One very depressing day, we bought ourselves a dress then enticed her friends to tag along in a pseudo-photo shoot.
We are so alike that her friends can instantly be my friends. And her dress be my dress.
For one afternoon we were away from the harsh realities of working and living in a foreign land.

For once, it was not about pleasing the boss but gratifying the patient photographer in front of us.
For just a few hours, it was about freedom. Rebelling against the norm and ignoring the covetous stares of the fully cloaked…

and being oblivious to the rudeness of men.
For the Photographer, it was a day of fortitude, waiting for several hours for us to pick the right dress and ending up with the first dress we saw in the first shop we went to.

But for him it was also a day of delight, especially having 3 ladies and 1 neuter all to himself.
For Aya and I, it was an escape from the predicaments of the present.

For me, it was about the happy dress – a facade to the internal breakdown of someone who found love 3 years ago and lost it on one Sharjah day.

It is very good to know that you had a good time, never mind the undercurrent of sadness.

I hope someday, you will look at that dress and not remember that you were sad when you first wore it. And that someday, a different dress will replace this Sharjah dress. It will be white, with a billowy trail. 🙂

Ate joyce! You just made my day 🙂 If I only could, I’d really love to blog everyday and tell you all the crazy-sadness going on inside my battered heart. haha. emo. My only joy really is finding time to blog in my toxic schedule. For those rare moments it makes me feel like a real writer, something I really want to be 😦
