I have never seen my little sister so worried about something. At 12 midnight (Philippine time) the other night, my youngest sister who was wide-awake chatted with me.
Beth: Hi, ate. When will you come home po?
Me: Matagal pa, ading. Maybe after a year.
Beth: So I’ll be grade 6 then?
Me: Yes, maybe. Why are you asking?
Beth: Nothing. Just so I will know.
Beth: Do you work in a restaurant po?
Me: No. ading. I work in a mall.
Beth: Are the people there kind?
Me: Not all.
Beth: They are masungit?
Me: Some, yes.
Beth: If they are masungit you transfer nalang po to another place.
Me: (smiles)
Beth: When ate Joy went to Manila I almost cried. Even when kuya Io will leave also. Kuya Io will come home in December. Ate Joy will come home in August. You naman will come home when I’m in grade 6 already.
Me: (Explains to her why I needed to be here) … Money… blah blah.. money.. blah blah.
Beth: Ate, on my next birthday, don’t give me a gift anymore because you need the money more. I will just wait for someone else to give me a gift.
Me: (Smiles)
Then the real problem unfolds.
Beth: Ate Joy’s gift for me are 2 hamsters. I am worrying because they don’t have food. And I am worrying because mama don’t like them pa. And if I go to school, they will be hot and maybe they’ll get sick.
Me: What do you feed them?
Beth: I am feeding them carrots and peanuts.
Me: Diba your ate Joy’s hamster lived before. Just make sure to put them in a clean house with water.
Beth: Ate Joy bought 2 hamstsers before and after 2 days they died na.
Me: (oops)
Beth: And there are cats here already, ate. I am worrying they will eat my hamsters.
Me: Don’t worry too much, ading. Your hamsters will live if you take care of them well.
Then came the clincher.
Beth: But mama said she will kill them.
Me: (speechless)

So I messaged my mom in Facebook
Me: Ma, wag mo naman patayin yung hamster ni Beth. Hindi ka naman cat a. pagbigyan mo na….
A few minutes later, my mom answered.
Mama: anong tingin nyo sa akin mamamatay hamster? Nandidiri lang ako no! Yikes!

Isa lang masasabi ko.
Poor hamsters.

malapit na mangyari tragedy sa buhay ni beth, yung hamster kahit patayin wala nang mararamdaman, si beth meron pa. voletsky remember yung giant white rat ko nung nasa Baguio Town House pa tayo? Pina-assasinate kaya ni mama yun, mas mahal pa nga ang contract sa pagpatay kesa sa rat mismo. hahaha

buddha, tell beth she can visit our humble abode. we have 5 dogs and 2 people. we need more people so the dogs won’t bully them 😉

Tell your sister to just have one hamster. Never two of different genders because they will multiply like crazy.

feeling ko nga hindi pa sila aabot sa multiplying stage kasi one hour alone with my mom at baka iflush na sila sa toilet bowl. haha.

Hamsters are cute, but useless as pets. Dogs or cats are better. Dogs make good guards (unless they’re chihuahuas or shitzus) and companions. Cats are good for guarding against smaller creatures like rats and snakes.
Which reminds me, there’s a new Cats & Dogs movie coming out. If you were here, I’d ask you to watch it with me and other friends. 🙂

Haha, kuya. I’m not a hamster fan either. Not a pet fan at all. when we were kids we played with real animals in their real habitat – snakes, snails, turtles, frogs, eel, monkeys, pigs, centipedes, tigers, bears (haha, add ons nalang yang last two). Perks of growing up in the mountains. I think i’m just happy that my lil sister gets to hold something furry, because unlike us, papa can’t take her to the jungle anymore 😦
