It happened in a parking lot,

In front of a supermarket,

On the most ordinary day,

In the most unexpected moment,

With a very cheap ring.

 

It was a ‘’fake’’ engagement ring –

One that was to put an end to the proposals,

A lot she gets  from presumptuous men.

 

He, always an extravagant man,

Didn’t want to buy anything cheap.

It took a lot of convincing.

A lot.

 

After the ring came groceries,

All for her.

He clasped her hands and walked with her

Back to the car.

 

She opened the box and pulled out the ring.

‘’Ask me now.’’

‘’Ask you what?’’

‘’To be your girlfriend.’’

The ring slipped into her fingers.

‘’Will you be my girlfriend?’’

 

In the parking lot for love is simple.

In front of the supermarket for love is nurture.

On the most ordinary day for love is reality.

In the most unexpected moment for love is a chance you take.

With a cheap ring for love is not silver nor gold,

Love is pure heart.

She whispered back,
