The Ateneo Placed 7th in World Debate Rankings

MANILA, Philippines – Four of the country’s top universities are in the top 50 debating societies in the world, according to the World University Debate Rankings, which was drawn from the results of 33 tournaments across the globe.

7th – Ateneo de Manila University

23rd – University of the Philippines Diliman

40th – University of the Philippines Manila

42nd – De La Salle University Manila

Topping the list of debating societies in the world is Sydney Union followed by Monash, both from Australia.

“The totals are calculated by adding the results of all the teams that society fielded in the tournaments we track over the course of the year, right up to the largest event — the World Universities Debating Championships. The rankings are maintained by Colm Flynn, an emeritus member and former chair of the World Debating Council and a former Deputy Chief Adjudicator for Worlds,” IDEA said on its website.

The Ateneo Debate Society have garneredĀ numerous awards and set several records in both nation and international tournaments.

Some of the many achievements:

– National Champion for the five consecutive years
– Asian Champion for the three straight years
– Reached the Final 8 of the World Championships
– Ranked 5th in the world, above the entire US Ivy League
– Named as one of the Ten Accomplished Youth Organizations (TAYO) in the Philippines
