I know I haven’t been following the news and this is too late a reaction, but I still wanna say…
When I grow up, I wanna be just like you!
”Early this month, Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio of Davao City in the Philippines, was caught on camera Friday, furiously punching city court sheriff Abe Andres for disobeying her explicit instructions, to delay for two hours the scheduled demolition of houses in a contested property in Barangay Soliman in the district of Agdao, Inquirer said.
It was an ugly sight for those who thought that the local executive has shown conduct unbecoming of a Mayor and of a woman. It was of course, until you hear the full story.
The mayor said she didn’t care about the consequences of her actions saying, “I was in the middle of 13,000 people who were badly in need of assistance and here you are doing this?”, referring to a relief and rescue operations for the victims affected by the recent Davao flood.
She said she had requested to hold the demolition until she arrived and prevent a bloody confrontation between the settlers and the police, after having reached an agreement with the dwellers for a safe relocation once the court order has arrived, but those were ignored by Sheriff Andres.”
I do not condone violence but sometimes, in this country, we need that kind of political will. Mayor Duterte is just a mirror of what many of us feel towards people running our government. She did what many of us couldn’t do: punch the problem on the face!
She was just asking for a 2-hour reprieve. What is that compared to real lives being in danger? I am all for the underprivileged.
Recently I got unjustifiably stuck in a foreign country. I called our embassy seeking for help. Their only assurance is, ”you’re in their territory, you should follow their rules.” Oh yes, if I could have transformed into a Mayor Duterte, I would have punched, punched, PUNCHED!
I haven’t been to Davao but all the Dabawenyos I know are all likeable people. Now, they’re having it all – they got a nice city, nice people… and now they got BALLS!
The mayor smacked four blows, by the way.
