Why do I need to keep being kind to others?

I was 22 years old when my father died. One of the values he intentionally taught me and my siblings was KINDNESS. He modeled this throughout his life, even when he was being abused by others.

Over and over, like brainwashing, he would tell us, “Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult. On the contrary, repay evil with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing.”

This kindness I have tried to live by just as he did. But many times in my life, I would throw a pity-party and ask God, “why do people then repay my kindness with disappointments, lies, cruelty and betrayal?”

Just recently, I was ready to turn away from being good to others and go full-on heartless. What’s the point, when people you vigorously helped, loved or treated like family, do not appreciate your efforts, or would leave you hanging, or worst, would deceive you!

Today, God spanked my butt and made me laugh a little. He whispered, “So pagod ka ng maging mabait? Etong sayo…” *Kaching*

A couple, who I’ve never helped before, nor have I ever dreamed will encounter in my life, offered me an act of kindness, more than I have prayed for or imagined. It was a positive answer and a promising partnership, one I have been pleading and crying to God for for many months. It was shockingly wonderful!

You see, sometimes, the people you helped may not be the same people who will help you back. Most of the time, God will use strangers or unexpected circumstances to bless you.

You may have walked a long street of people who repaid your kindness with nothing but apathy or evil. But keep on walking, for just around the corner, you will meet someone who will show you an act or two of KINDNESS, and that will be worth all the good you did for others.
