HaB Korea: Korean Folk Village – The Experience (Part 1)

The Korean Folk Village is a cultural theme park that ushers guests into the past, particularly the Joseon dynasty.Korean Folk Village

We came after lunch during a weekday, the perfect time if you want to avoid the crowd at the entrance.

Korean Folk Village (한국민속촌)

Covering over 243 acres of land, the park is divided into 4 major sections: market village, folk village, amusement village and the bazaar.

Korean Folk VillageReplicas of traditional houses were patterned from designs of various regions of the country.

The different social classes were very well-represented – from peasant homes to houses of wealthy landowners.

The park also features a farming village, a fortune-teller’s place, a government office, educational and medical institutions, religious buildings, and traditional shops.

The streets and structures show realistic details to portray the old ways of life.

One of the many customs that piqued my interest was the Seonang-dang (Shrine to the village deity) and five-color fabric.

Korean Folk Village

Seonang-dang means a pile of stones or a tree in the entrance of the village. People used to make their wish after putting 3 stones on it when passing by this place. Five-color fabric means four directions and the center. This is to prepare for misfortune and disasters.

Here’s a funny sight! Convenient stores that time travelled for the hungry tourists. 🙂

The village is also known for being the filming location of popular dramas and movies (more on this later)…

Apart from the historical architectures and amusement rides, the park also offers all sorts of activities. They have festivals all year round, art performances, cultural ceremonies and recreational workshops.

Korean Folk Village

I guess the best feature of the village is how everything blends with nature. It was refreshing to be surrounded by trees, grass, water and some harmless animals scurrying around.

Korean Folk Village

My favorite view: the water wheel mill.

The persimmon fruit, a must-try when visiting Korea!

The entire landscape is beautiful! With the mountains as backdrop and the river running from end to end, I can stay here all day.

Everywhere is a picture-perfect spot!
